TMJ Therapy

Do you crave relief from headaches or unexplained facial, neck, jaw, or shoulder pain? Does your jaw click when you speak or chew? You may have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Millions of Americans experience this annoying, and often debilitating, dysfunction of the jaw joint. Dr. Winters will assess your jaw function and provide customized treatment to alleviate discomfort and restore healthy function.

Causes of TMJ Disorder
The two small joints that control jaw motion are sensitive to a variety of influences. Stress, trauma, a misaligned bite, and a host of other factors can irritate these joints, expose nerve endings, and cause impaired function. The resulting discomfort can range from mild to debilitating and can dramatically decrease your quality of life.

Diagnosis and Treatment
As a neuromuscular dentist trained at LVI, Dr. Winters understands that the teeth, jaw muscles, and nerves must work together for whole-mouth harmony. He employs modern technology to assess jaw function and determine the source of TMJ-related discomfort.

First, Dr. Winters will use a special machine that allows your muscles to relax and your jaw to position to its' most comfortable position. Next, our K-7 computer will record your jaw’s proper alignment and render a 3D image. Dr. Winters will use this image to create a custom oral appliance that encourages optimal alignment of jaw and teeth to eliminate TMJ pain.
